This is an original press photo. This is a view looking North over Salerno, Italy, nearly two years after US Fifth Army troops who landed Sept. 9, 1943, on beaches south of the city were pinned down more than a week by murderous fire from German guns established in the hills overlooking the city and landing beaches. Invasion forces cracked German defenses in mid-September to join the British 8th Army for the drive North through Italy. One of a set by AP photographer Frank Noel. Photo measures 11 x 8 inches. Photo is dated 09-08-1945.
